The last Friday of each month sees the old market place in Stockport filled with food vans supplying all manner of gourmet offers. Foodie Friday is a very successful event, drawing thousands of people who come to sample the range of wares. The market evening is managed by the local social enterprise SevemilesOut http://www.sevenmilesoutarts.co.uk
Last night, thanks to sevenmilesout, Steve from the social movements team, Nicola from StartPoint community coffee shop in Woodley and I had a stall where we got people enjoying their night out to tell us how they thought we might use food too tackle loneliness in Stockport. The fabulously creative Nicola had produced bags of potatoes, onions, stock cubes and thyme to give away ( With a recipe for soup on the front) and in return we asked people to write their ideas on paper plates.
We really enjoyed hearing from people, and we found that people were curious about what we were doing (Nicola’s vegetable cakes were a definite draw as a talking point!) we will be writing up all the suggestions and making the connections and links that people gave us. The market gives us a fantastic platform to continue the conversation, and we will be back in the coming months to talk with local people about how they can take action.
